Det Insp Andrew Ferguson, from Strathclyde Police, said: "Our enquiries have so far revealed that Mr McLaughlin was involved in an altercation with at least one other man outside his flat at number 13 Gertrude Place and as a result of this, he was seriously injured.
"We also know that he managed to make his way to number nine nearby to seek help but died before he could get help.
"Although it all happened in the early hours of the morning, it is possible that residents may have heard loud, raised voices or shouting and looked out of their window to see what was happening.
"We have been carrying out door-to-door enquires in the area and have been encouraged by the response we have had so far."
He added: "We know the answer lies within this community. I am very aware that there may be a reluctance by people to come forward but I would urge anyone who has information that will help us with our enquiries, to contact police."
